這次(或者說本張專輯大部分歌曲)擁抱的是放克--另一個由黑人發揚光大的曲風...

除了持續強調對"黑人文化"及"根源性"的重視之外

 

Kendrick也透過虛擬人物Kunta Kinte的故事

來比喻自己自底層一路奮鬥，到成為饒舌界當今霸主的心路歷程。

你也曾為”誤用自身影響力”這件事感到矛盾…

*bone to pick: 要爭執/討論的事情。後面常加with，表示對對方很有意見。這段是對前一首歌For Free之最後一句歌詞的回應。

*Monkey mouth: 俚語，類似於在喝掛之後，隔天嘴巴所散發出的口臭，這裡引申為(出口成髒的)饒舌歌手。

*這句歌詞源自於靈魂/放克傳奇歌手James Brown單曲"The Payback"，這也是King Kunta第一首採樣歌曲。

(該歌總共5首採樣歌曲，為專輯中最多。)

*取自18世紀暢銷黑人小說 《 The Saga of an American Family 》中主人公Kunta Kinte，並與自己的名字做諧音結合

同時也藉由主人公的故事，來代指自己從底層奮鬥至頂端的心路歷程。

*山藥，這裡代指黑人常吸的白粉。對黑人而言，該物象徵權力。

*借用自歐巴馬於2008年競選總統時的口號。

*Ghost writer一詞在音樂圈相當常見，要用最好懂的解釋，就是"幕後寫手"

而對於講求作詞功力的饒舌界來說，有人在背後幫你寫詞，就是遜人一等。

*brown nose，俚語，去捧LP、諂媚的人，另有兩詞也有相同意思：teacher's pet, ass kisser。

*bum，意為街頭行乞的人。

*Richard Pryor，已故美國喜劇演員，曾在吸食古柯鹼後引火自焚，也讓他一舉"成名"。

*在這裡yams又替代成另一種意思：女人的屁屁。

*Goat mouth，來自於牙買加的詞彙，意為做出惡毒預言或詛咒之人，簡言之就是"帶衰"。

*mammy，指19至20世紀時，幫白人家庭帶小朋友的黑人女傭(詳見電影"亂世佳人"、"自由之心"。)

*本段歌詞引用自Jay-Z歌曲"Thank You"

極有可能指Kendrick當初在Big Sean的歌曲"Control"中以一大段verse向各家rapper嗆聲，結果(不意外地)招致diss

但這些東西對於王者般存在的Kendrick來說，根本不痛不癢。(建議收聽，真的極嗆)

*nappy head: 俚語，指行為模式尚未脫離小孩階段的人。

*嘻哈界有句名言：「Life's a bitch」(源自Nas經典專輯Illmatic中的經典曲目)，意指"人生其實沒那麼糟，不管怎樣還是要過下去"

這段算是把這句至理名言，以比較直接的方式講出來了。

*在80年代的美國，在監獄中的黑人都活不過25歲。(若要得知相關細節，建議觀看紀錄片《憲法第13號修正案 13th》)

*這段引用自Michael Jackson經典單曲Smooth Criminal的副歌歌詞

MJ著名舞步之一：傾斜45度角，就是來自這裡，另外Chris Brown歌曲She Ain't You、Fine China中的MV造型也是向此致敬。

*採樣自1994年Ahmad單曲"We Want the Funk，並藉此呼籲大家重視黑人音樂的根源。

*To Pimp a Butterfly主要概念：一首由Kendrick親自創作、名為Another Nigga的詩，自此開始。
